Deconstructing, Reconstructing, Traditions

“As a person of multi-racial background—both Chinese and American—I found myself losing connection with my culture and heritage over time.
My work serves as a form of communication born out of a failure to fully communicate verbally.”

- Yuri Coleman

In the gallery, you are introduced to a series of hand-crafted paper lanterns, as well as photos of traditional Chinese objects, all of which are tied to personal memories. Each has been formally manipulated through physical craftsmanship or digital alteration. My work explores the convoluted and confusing process of cross-cultural communication, using art as a means to convey these complexities.

Elemental Sublime

“Elemental Sublime is an ongoing series of oil paintings inspired by “my everyday.” Whether that is my daily walks at the park, hiking, sitting at the beach, or even just my grandma’s garden. I find a it a meditative practice to sit and admire the beauty of the elements.”

- Yuri Coleman
